Loves, I wouldn't ask if it weren’t urgent.
Sixteen-year-old Lwanga Sillaje, one of our beloved Desire Kids and a brave #SickleCellWarrior, is being held at the hospital in Uganda until a massive surgery bill is paid.
He’s already endured so much. Since age 13, Lwanga has been ghosted by four sponsors. One even said, “He’s going to die anyway.” Unfortunately, Lwanga overheard that. And still, he has faced every pain and setback with courage, hope, and light. His faith is his guide.
Last week, he suffered internal bleeding and a dangerous intestinal blockage. He required emergency life-saving surgery: $5,000. The hospital refused to operate without a $2,000 deposit. We didn’t have it. A compassionate hospital staff member begged them to proceed anyway—and they did.
Lwanga survived. But now the cost is growing, and he is being detained at the hospital until it’s paid, charged daily. The person who helped has now been suspended from her job, and Desire Child Care Organization is under real threat of losing our nonprofit status. This is the reality of unregulated hospitals in Uganda.
We’ve created "Team Lwanga" through my group "Hermi’s Hermits" to bring him home—and ensure this never happens again. This isn’t just about money. It’s about restoring dignity, raising #SickleCellAwareness, and surrounding Lwanga with the community he deserves.
Here’s how you can help right now:
A generous donor just pledged $500, if we match it by 2am EST tonight. That would get us a quarter of the way there.
